Map downloads fail

The current version has issues with downloading the OSM (free) maps from the in-app store. You cannot download them other than through the app itself and the WiFi connection will not work well enough to complete a download. The developer tells me that the problem is in my network, although when I took my iPhone to the local Apple store, with their legendary 30 mb T3 connection, it still failed.
Seems to be a problem with the app, not the network.
Would appreciate a better way to download the maps and save them, as if you ever need to restore your iPhone or iPad, you lose the maps.
The app is very good other than the maps. Lots of data and options. Have not used it in the plane yet for full testing as the maps have been an issue. Would love to be able to try it though.
